Behind the Notebook.
Branelon Notebook is an independent editorial publication based in Clerkenwell, London. It documents everyday nutrition practice, food choices, weight awareness, and the rhythms that connect them.
Eleanor Whitfield
Eleanor Whitfield has been writing about nutrition awareness and the relationship between food choices and weight from a documentary perspective since 2019. She trained as a nutrition professional and spent several years working in editorial roles at independent wellness publications before founding Branelon Notebook in 2023.
Her approach to writing about food and weight is observational rather than prescriptive. She keeps a daily food journal — a practice she has maintained continuously for over seven years — and draws on this personal record alongside published dietary research and conversations with qualified nutrition professionals to inform the editorial perspective of the Notebook.
Based in Clerkenwell, she visits the Exmouth Market and neighbouring produce stalls each Sunday, and considers the weekly market visit to be as much a part of the Notebook's editorial practice as the writing itself. The Notebook is, in her words, "a record of what happens when you pay attention to what you eat, over time, without judgement."
What Branelon Notebook Is
Branelon Notebook is an independent editorial publication focused on everyday nutrition practices and weight awareness. It is not affiliated with any commercial, governmental, or institutional body. It carries no advertising and accepts no sponsorship from food producers, supplement companies, or wellness brands.
The publication is funded entirely by reader support, which we believe is essential to the independence of its editorial perspective. When we write about seasonal produce, whole foods, or the relationship between activity and weight, we do so without any commercial relationship to the products or practices we describe.
Articles published on Branelon Notebook are editorial in nature and reflect the writers' observations on everyday nutrition practices and weight awareness. The content is not intended as professional advice, nor as guidance for the management of any specific condition. Readers with specific concerns about their daily routines are encouraged to speak with a qualified wellness professional.
The editorial focus is deliberately narrow: diet and weight, as observed from a London perspective, across the seasons, through the lens of daily practice. We are not a general health publication. We do not cover the full range of nutrition topics. We cover what we know from personal observation and careful reading of published dietary research.
The tone is observational and documentary rather than instructional. We note what we see — in the market, in the food journal, in the available research — and we report it as clearly as we can. We do not tell readers what to eat. We describe what we have eaten, and what we have noticed as a result.
The Notebook publishes on no fixed schedule. We publish when we have something worth saying, which tends to be every two to four weeks. Each piece is written to be read slowly, in the manner of a long-form magazine article rather than a news post.
Guest Writers
Tobias Ashcroft is a writer based in Islington who focuses on seasonal food, London market culture, and the intersection of local produce with everyday nutrition awareness. He contributes occasional pieces to Branelon Notebook on seasonal topics, bringing a particular interest in how spring and summer produce shapes the weekly plate in urban kitchens.
Read his latest piece →Branelon Notebook occasionally invites guest contributions from writers who can bring a documented, observational perspective on nutrition, food choices, and weight. We are interested in personal practice, market notes, seasonal records, and accounts of sustained dietary attention over time. We are not interested in advocacy, product reviews, or prescriptive content.
